From Rags to Riches

A female friend introduced her highly confident mid twenties events marketing party girlfriend to a good looking, conservative, late twenties Ad exec. A few weeks later Miss Party Girl calls Miss Intro Girl and states that says Mr. Ad Exec is boring and was disappointing in bed. She then proceeds to makes fun of his love handles, tacky hair cut and fashion sense and then said she "wasn't into him." Miss Intro Girl then told her that he's a really loyal guy and mentioned that his family invented frozen foods. She added how he spoiled previous girlfriends with jewelry, designer shoes and handbags (unlike the Canal St. counterfiet Prada's that filled Miss Party Girl's studio apartment.)

With this enlightening update Miss Party Girl was able to reframe her perspective into more amorous feelings for Mr. Ad Exec. She has since move into his luxury apartment, and is enjoying her new lifestyle so much that they are now engaged with no pre nup. So my question is: Is this an acceptable way to go from rags to riches?

I don't know who is worse in this case. I know someone like the Ad Exec who always showed-off all his monetary possessions to get ("buy") girls and friends. He's so shallow to think that this is the only way to do it. But this has lead him to end up with someone just as shallow and incapable of providing for herself the life she now brags about and takes for granted. She didn't even notice him until she knew about his expensive house.

DISGUSTING. Is this city full of empty gold-digging little girls?

Whatever happened to going for the heart and mind, and seeing how chemistry might develop? And what about not hopping into bed after just one week? No doubt she would have been disappointed.

This sickens me. I am an extremely attractive, educated, "hip", ambitious, dynamic and socially-inclined 20-something and have dated all different men -- none of whom I dated for looks or wallet-size. In fact, some of them were not attractive, and some of them made much less money than I do. I don't make a lot of money. And, yes, I know what it means to have it, my family is well-off but they haven't given me ONE hand-out since they paid for my college education.

Perhaps, however, this gentleman is ok with the fact that he is being used. Perhaps he is just as shallow as this woman is.

If a Prada bag is symbolic of happiness for a person, then health, true love, and family mean nothing to them. They have not and will not figure out what life means.

Too often we accept this behavior -- at our little NYC loft parties, Hampton's parties...trying desperately to fit in and not feeling "right" without the "right" things. Well, perhaps that is why I usually end up dating broke and less attractive men -- I don't feel the pressure to live a sick life, and yet I can still enjoy wherever I am and whoever I am with.

This woman is a total loser and surely Karma will catch her tail with a REAL hardship at some point in her short life. And, it is too bad for the gentleman she has ridiculed and used; if he is unaware I'm sure he will figure it out soon. If I knew him, I would tell him. If he is aware, then he is just as guilty as her...or worse.

Is this much different than someone interviewing for a job not because they are interested in the work, but becuase they are interested in the $$?

This girl went on a date (interview) to learn about this guy (job requirements) and she initially didn't like what he had to offer. But when she learned about the perks (high salary/bonus) her perspective changed a little.

I'm guessing more people out there can relate to this professional parallel - so is this girl really worse than the corporate slaves who sell their souls for those 6+ figure salaries?

Are the professionals you speak of having sex for money?

I think we can say she's providing sex for money among other considerations.

There lies the rub.

While her motives are questionable it does seem that this girl has obtained a goal shared by many. The first question that comes to my mind is, "Since she is clever enough to marry into inherited money (and perpetuated-as shown by his job) will she be wise enough to refine her habits enough to be accepted among the leisure class?"
